Star through Bahtinov masks with different optical densities

Capella on 24.09.2011 between 23:50 and 23:54 CEST through modified Bahtinov masks.

The original Bahtinov mask from which this modified version has been derived was calculated (by "astrojargon dot net") for a focal length of 1000 mm, an aperture of d = 195 mm. The angle of the diagonal bars is 20°. The modification was carried out in a normal picture / photo software. The five masks used here were printed in black and several tones of grey (from above to below: 000, 050, 100, 150, 200).

Starting with a medium grey (something between 100 and 150) the diffraction masks show a reduced ability to create as nice diffraction patterns as when printed in black (000). Even a nearly empty black ink cartridge wouldn't print a whole mask in that grey, it would be empty before the end of the page.

Between the images above the focus was not adjusted. But obviously the good focus from te beginning got lost during taking this series of images.

Filter: Bahtinov masks (3634x3510), black ink on transparent overhead sheet, approximately 440 ppi
Lens: catadioptric system 5.6 / 1000 with modified lens mount adapter
Camera: DSLR (APS-C)
Mount: ball head on wooden tripod
Focusing: manual with live preview
Shutter release: remote timer with mirror lock-up
Exposure: Av, 0 EV, 5 s, ISO 800, AWB
Image processing: original 5184x3456 images cropped to 800x200 and merged to the final image, hot pixels not removed, white separator lines added

1st exposure of the first scene of my own private IR shoot out. Botanical Gardens, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco.

The bottom is chopped off because I loaded the film back in a dark bag and couldn't see the "arrows" on the leader and thus I underestimated and didn't spool enough leader paper before inserting the cartridge in the back. I have since learned the approximate length of the paper before spooling.

Schroeder KKZ10 Z-Media Filter Cartridge, Micro-Glass, Removes Rust, Metallic Debris, Fibers, Dirt; 18

The special class of micro-glass and other fibers used in Z media are manufactured with utmost precision, to specific thicknesses and densities, and bonded with select resins to create material with extra fine passages. No other filter media can provide the benefits of Schroeder’s Excellement Z media: maximum dirt-holding capacity, superior particle capture, excellent beta stability, minimum pressure drop, high flow rate and low operating cost. The typical multiple layer construction has evolved from comprehensive laboratory testing to provide extended element life and system protection. Each successive layer performs a distinct and necessary function. The outermost layer is designed to maintain element integrity. Beyond this layer is a spun bonded scrim, offering coarse filtration and protection for the filtering layers within. Multiple sheets of fine filtering media follow, providing intricate passageways for the entrapment of dirt particles. Together, the various layers of filter media provide the ideal combination for peak filtration performance. Schroeder KKZ10 Z-Media Filter Cartridge: Micro-Glass, 18" Cartridge Height, 3.9" Cartridge OD, 1.625" Cartridge ID; 10 Micron (absolute); 150 psid maximum differential presure; Removes: Rust, Metallic Debris, Fibers, Dirt; Dirt Holding Capacity: 216 grams.
